SAMBURU & THE MASAI MARA

A superb combination offering two of the best wildlife viewing areas in Kenya. The safari starts with a flight to Samburu National Park where you stay at Samburu Intrepids Camp followed by a stay at Kicheche Mara Camp on the plains of the Masai Mara.

Day 1: On arrival in Nairobi you will be met and transferred to Macushla House. Macushla House is set in the suburb of Langata, only 20 minutes drive from the city centre, overlooking one of the last pockets of indigenous forest. The ideal location for travellers who want to escape the stress of the city centre. It offers privacy and space in an informal atmosphere for a maximum of 10 guests, a home away from home.

Day 2: This morning after breakfast transfer to Wilson airport for your 08:15 flight to Samburu. You will be met on arrival and game driven en-route to Samburu Intrepids. Enjoy an afternoon game drive. Samburu/ Buffalo Springs Reserve is located on the fringe of the arid northern region of Kenya within the territory of the Samburu pastoralists. Due to it’s location it has wildlife that is rare elsewhere in the country. These animals include the Gerenuk antelope, Oryx, Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich and Reticulated giraffe. Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp located within the Samburu Game Reserve on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. The camp is shaded by tall acacia trees and all 27 tents overlook the river. The dining and lounge areas are more reminiscent of a fantasy tree house set on stilts with its vaulted thatched roofs and sprawling wooden terraces. All tents are spacious, well appointed, have en-suite facilities and are fronted by individual decks overlooking the river. There is a swimming pool and optional activities include bush breakfasts, bird walks and camel safaris.

Days 3 & 4: Two full days for game viewing, take early morning and late evening game drives returning to the lodge for meals. Overnight at Samburu Intrepids.

Day 5: This morning your scheduled flight to the Masai Mara Game Reserve departs at 09:15 to arrive Mara at 10:45. Here we will meet you and transfer you across the plains to the camp. Freshen up before lunch. Later set off on an afternoon game drive till sunset. Return to camp for a hot shower, then join us around the campfire for an aperitif before dining under the stars. Kicheche Mara Camp is a luxury bush camp hidden away in a grove of trees on the Aitong plains of the Masai Mara.

There are a maximum of 20 guests, all staying under canvas in this intimate camp situated in prime wildlife habitat.

Days 6 & 7: Rise early with tea or coffee brought to your tent. At dawn set off for another drive on the plains. Return to the camp for a leisurely breakfast. Afterwards, explore the camp surrounds, or visit a Maasai manyatta (village). Lunch and a chance to relax in camp. Afternoon tea is followed by further game-viewing to sunset. Return to camp for an evening around the campfire. The Masai Mara game reserve, is probably the most famous in Africa. Rising grassland nearly 2000m above sea level, watered by the Mara river and covering an area of 1500 sq. km.

The Mara is well known for the part it plays in the seasonal (June/Sept) migration from the Serengeti of 200,000 Zebra, 300,000 Thomson Gazelle and 1.3 million Wildebeest following the annual rains. The Mara region however provides for wonderful game viewing year round. In all 95 mammal, amphibian and reptile species plus 485 flying species excluding insects inhabit the Mara eco-system.

Day 8: A full morning game drive to the Musiara Marsh with a picnic breakfast is a popular trip. After returning to camp for lunch we transfer you back to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi departing at 4 p.m. You will be transferred to The Rusty Nail Restaurant for the rest of the evening. Later transfer to the airport for your international flight.
