WILDERNESS TRAIL
Backpacking
These trails are designed with the intrepid explorer in mind. Matusadona National Park covers some 1400 square kilometres of which two thirds are made up of broken hillsides and deep valleys. Here there are no roads and it remains the untamed wilderness. On Wilderness trails, all equipment that is needed for a few days in the wild is carried in backpacks. The route follows paths made by elephants making for easier walking conditions along ridges and to watering points.Along with good populations of elephant; rhino lion, leopard, buffalo and numerous antelope species inhabit the rugged heartland of Matusadona. With good water supplies in the form of springs and pools in rocky river courses, plentiful food and animal interference from humans, the wildlife in this area flourishes.
After starting walking in the early morning, camp is often struck by lunch next to a good water source, giving the opportunity to swim and explore the area in the afternoons without the hindrance of backpacks.
With all equipment being carried in backpacks, the camps are basic. Seldom do you feel closer to nature than sleeping out on a roll mat with a sleeping bag under a mosquito net with an incredible array of stars above.
Meals are pre cooked for the evenings and lunches and breakfasts tend to be light affairs. For drinks, we rely on tea/coffee and fruit cordials.
Guests should be reasonably fit for these trails. They can be tailor-made with porters for those wishing to explore but unable to carry the packs.
