THE NORTHERN MALAWI JOURNEY
7 Nights / 8 Days

Northern Malawi offers the finest scenery, wildlife and wilderness in the country. There are two national parks in the north. Vwaza Marsh provides some of the best elephant watching in Africa by vehicle and on foot as well as superb birding. The montane grasslands of the Nyika National Park are a unique habitat with unusual wildlife and an amazing variety of wildflowers including over 200 species of orchids. Between the two parks 500 species of birds have been recorded.

After a safari in these two parks Lake Malawi is a perfect haven to relax with wonderful snorkeling, diving, beaches and also great cultural and historical interest. Here you can choose to stay at Makuzi Beach on the northern lakeshore or at Nkwichi Lodge on the Mocambique side of the lake. Both are beautiful properties but each has its own distinctive feeling.

By using the Nyika Air aircraft (Cessna 206) throughout the safari these itineraries are guaranteed departures on any day of the week. All the itineraries start and finish in Lilongwe.

Extra nights at any of the properties can be added with ease.

For a little extra cost we can arrange for the aircraft to combined this northern Malawi itinerary with southern Malawi, Mbeya and Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania or the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. These extra flights and properties can be quoted on request.

Days 1 & 2: Kazuni Safari Camp - Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve.
The low-lying area of Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is an interesting contrast to the high Nyika Plateau. Most of the reserve is flat and covered with Mopane and Miombo woodland, but the eastern side is hilly and the reserve is rich in wetlands with the Vwaza Marsh itself in the North and Lake Kazuni in the South. These wetlands provide a haven for animals and birdlife. Kazuni Safari Camp.

Days 3, 4 & 5: Chelinda Lodge - Nyika Plateau
Time is of the essence if you want to experience to the full the wilderness and beauty of the Nyika National Park. The approach road to the Park is in itself unforgettable, climbing the escarpment to the 2 000m high plateau, and affording panoramic views across the northern stretch of Lake Malawi on the way. Four major rivers have their source high on this plateau, and descending the rugged escarpment, tumble down in spectacular waterfalls. The rolling hills of the plateau area are clothed in waving grassland, crisscrossed by small streams, and dotted with copses of rain forest growing in the folds of the hills.
