Mbweni Ruins Hotel, Zanzibar.

Privacy and comfort enfold you at Mbweni, this was a former haven of freed slaves. The hotel is built in the spacious grounds of the ruins of the first Anglican Christian missionary settlement in East Africa, from 1871. This was the time of slavery, and of the great explorers Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Baker, Grant and Speke.

There are only twelve suites, appointed with most comforts but no radios or televisions. Telephones work some of the time. The swimming pool overlooks a pleasant beach where mangroves attract rich birdlife and splashing dolphins. Bushbabies and fire flies make their presence known in the long, warm and dusky evenings, while you dine, overlooking the Indian Ocean, lit by an African moon.

There are many optional extras available from the hotel, from visits to the many interesting parts of the island including the Spice Tour and the Jozani Forest or Traditional Dhow trips and local villages and beaches as well as scuba diving and snorkelling. You can of course relax in the hotel and enjoy the Natural Health Centre that is based in the hotel. There is everything from Shiatsu and Aromotherapy or Reflexology, Meditation Sessions and Fresh Fruit Facial, they even have something called Qi Gong!!!
