SOUTH AFRICAN HORSE BACK SAFARIS
5 Night Explorer Horse Safari
This safari offers a combination of 3 nights riding from the base camp and 2 nights spent overnighting at a comfortable fly camp in a remote section of Lapalala Wilderness. The combination allows guests the opportunity to relax and enjoy the luxury and excellent riding and game viewing from base camp as well as the adventure and sense of freedom of a mobile safari which explores a wilderness area seen by very few visitors to Lapalala.
The safari is led by licensed professional guides and backed up by a four wheel drive vehicle, chef and crew who will ensure that camp is ready on arrival. The fly camp, set in a grove of shady trees next to a stream, consists of walk-in dome tents with mattresses, linen and hot bucket showers. Canvas chairs are pulled up around a campfire or can be moved under a large canvas awning for dining. On all our safaris, great emphasis is placed on comfortable accommodation, excellent food and well-chilled drinks!
Time spent in the saddle averages 4 - 7 hours daily with a stop every 2 hours for refreshments or a picnic lunch. This safari is recommended for intermediate and advanced riders who are fit. The areas explored en route are all excellent game areas and there is a good chance of seeing a wide variety of the mammal and bird species resident on the reserve. The pace varies from quiet walking through thick bush either following spoor or just observing the natural world around us, to long trots and exhilarating canters where the going is good. The route followed traverses high mountain plateaus with sweeping views across the Waterberg, crosses open grassy plains and follows river courses through the hills.
Our horses, which are cross-bred indigenous breeds (mostly Boerperd, Arabs, Friesians and TB crosses) are particularly well-suited to this environment and have been bred specifically in the last hundred years in South Africa for this type of work. They are even-tempered and sure-footed and will carry you safely through this challenging terrain. They enjoy moving on at a faster pace and are eager and willing to jump any natural obstacles. They are our greatest and most beloved asset and we take extremely good care of them.
This safari is offered in the months of January, February, March, October, November and December for a minimum of 4 guests and a maximum of 8. As these are the summer months in South Africa and short thunderstorms can be expected, it is essential that guests bring a waterproof raincoat and hat. By prior arrangement, this safari can also be organized during the months of April to September - please enquire.
