UGANDA
CLASSIC SAFARI Optional Extensions are also
available to this safari This programme is designed for all those who are interested to see the key places of Southern-Western Uganda: Kibale Forest NP, Queen Elizabeth NP/ Mweya sector, Queen Elizabeth NP/ Ishasha sector, Kyambura WR and Bwindi Impenetrable NP. It can also be combined and extended with additional trips which makes it attractive for the active ones who would like to see as much as possible of Uganda's beauty. Arrival at Entebbe International Airport Meet and greet at the Airport. Transfer to Kisubi, and our camp site on the shores of Lake Victoria, only 10 km from Entebbe airport. We advise participants to arrive at Entebbe airport the day before the safari departure. (overnight included)
Day 1: Kisubi - Kibale Forest NP After breakfast we drive at Fort Portal via Mubende. After this long trip we have a nature walk at Bigodi swamps. This bird watching trip is organised by the local community which protects the site (IBA) and provides a specialised guide. We camp near Kibale Forest NP.
Day 2: We visit Kibale Forest NP reputable to have the greatest variety and the highest concentration of primates in East-Africa. A guided nature walk in the tropical forest in search of the wild chimpanzees. In the afternoon we travel to Queen Elisabeth - Northern sector and we explore a few of the crater lakes typical for this beautiful region. We set up a camp at Mweya which overlooks the magnificent Kazinga Channel. Days 3 & 4: Two days of observing wild game: lions, elephants, buffalos, hippos, kobs but also many bird species. Queen Elizabeth is a birders paradise! During two days we will extensively visit the northern sector. We will explore the Uganda Kob mating ground, in search for the lions. The Maramagambo forest, where we will visit the Bat and Hunter's cave and get a look at the bats, the pythons and the forest cobras. The salt works at Katwe and a visit of the Kasenyi fishing village. The boat trip up the Kazinga Channel, a natural canal between lake Edward and lake George is one of the highlights of your safari. An excellent diner, cool drinks and a campfire will bring you an "Out of Africa" atmosphere! Evenings you will not easily forget!
Day 5: QENP Mweya - QENP Ishasha After breakfast we have a short drive to Kyambura WR. We hike into the gorge of the Kyambura river for another but different experience with the chimps. It's a rewarding experience not only to see the chimpanzees but also to see the beautiful river valley with many bird species. After a light meal, we travel along Ishaka to Ishasha, which is South of the QENP. The four-hour drive proves the Land Cruiser's suitability for such a terrain. We camp on the banks of the Ishasha river in company of the hippos! Day 6: We explore Southern sector of QENP (Ishasha) considered by some experts as one of the most alluring game viewing areas of East Africa. It's an off-the beaten-track destination. We wake up early, of course, since this is the best time of the day for observing nature. We will drive over the plains of Ishasha in the open savannah. The Ishasha sector is known for it's tree climbing lions, but has much more to offer. After an initial scouting expedition, we return for a brunch. After the brunch, we relax, observe the hippos and take some time for a shower or siesta in the shadow of the woods. In the afternoon we have another game drive, this time we explore the lake Edward flats (only during dry season). Another overnight at Ishasha.
Day 7: Ishasha QENP - Bwindi Impenetrable NP (Buhoma) Early wake up by the hippos for a last game drive after which we go to Buhoma. We arrive in the afternoon and have a walk around the camp or we simply relax and enjoy the tropical rainforest. We camp at the edge of the rainforest, a totally different environment.
This safari supports the local community by using their services and camping site. If time, the orphans of the Buhoma village will perform their Bakiga dances. If participants want to contribute we advise them to bring some used clothes or school pencils.
Day 8: Bwindi Impenetrable NP, is a natural World Heritage site. Hikers will love it, with the gorilla excursion as high point of the safari. Gorilla trekking is unpredictable. It's difficult to foresee how many hours you will hike. The gorilla excursion can take from 4 up to 8 hours. Expect to walk a long distance in steep and muddy conditions, sometimes with rain overhead, before you encounter any gorillas. A good physical condition is recommended. For conservation purposes, time spent with the gorillas is limited to one hour. A ranger guide will brief you on how to behave with the gorillas. Another overnight at Buhoma.
Day 9: Bwindi Impenetrable NP - Lake Bunyonyi After breakfast we clear the camp. Meanwhile participants can have a walk at the village (handcrafts & iron Blacksmith) We depart for lake Bunyonyi and arrive in the afternoon. After Bwindi, some relaxing moments on the shores of this wonderful lake will be welcome for most participants. Overnight at Lake Bunyonyi Overland Camp. Gorilla viewing is the greatest animal experience ever! For your trekking we recommend a good physical condition! Gorilla permits need to be booked and paid 3 to 6 months in advance depending on the period! Book your scheduled safari accordingly and avoid any disappointment! Day 10: Lake Bunyonyi - Kisubi. Lake Bunyonyi, place of little birds is a very idyllic spot that you most likely will regret to leave. We will drive 6 hours to reach Kisubi. Your tent will be ready! Those who have chosen the excursion to Rwanda will travel directly from Lake Bunyonyi to Kigali, a three hours drive with excellent road conditions. (min. 2 participants)
