ZAMBEZI WILDLIFE EXPERIENCE
Affordable Zambia

A 7 nights / 8 days safari

A safari in Zambia offers Africa’s finest wilderness experience. The Zambezi Valley, with the mighty Zambezi River forming its southern boundary, is a wildlife paradise. The rugged Zambezi escarpment forms a dramatic backdrop to the valley, and the fertile woodlands and floodplain, with abundant water, attract huge numbers of elephant and buffalo as well as the many species of antelope.

The predators – lion, leopard, spotted hyaena and wild dog aren’t far behind. The river offers excellent boat based wildlife and bird viewing with a high concentration of hippo, crocodile and riverine bird species. The Valley is one of the most exciting birdwatching destinations in Africa. Huge colonies of brightly coloured bee-eaters and other birds breed in the steep banks of the river, and the shallows and sandbars along the river offer feeding grounds to a wide variety of waterbirds.

Dense riverine woodland, open grasslands, dry deciduous thickets, thorny Acacia woodland are home to a huge variety of birds from large eagles to tiny lovebirds. The area is still very non-commercial, and visitors can experience a truly wild and remote part of Africa.

Days 1 to 4
The safari starts in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, and we then charter directly to Kayila Lodge, our base for the first four nights. The flight from Lusaka is only 30 minutes and very scenic. Kayila Lodge is an exclusive 12-bedded camp situated in a private 10 000 acre wildlife sanctuary which stretches back from the River to the impressive range of hills forming the Zambezi escarpment. Accommodation is in twin-bedded chalets with en suite facilities. There is a thatched central dining area and a natural rock plunge pool. Activities at Kayila include game viewing and birdwatching in open 4x4 safari vehicles, bush walks with an armed professional guide, and boat trips on the Zambezi River. In addition we will be able to drive at night looking for nocturnal birds and mammals in the powerful spotlights.

A charter flight to Livingstone moves us on for our final three nights upstream of the magnificent Victoria Falls.

Days 5 to 8
We stay in Thorntree River Lodge situated in the Mosi oa Tunya National Park, some 15 km from the town. The lodge is built on the banks of the Zambezi River and each stone-under-thatch chalet has a private veranda overlooking the river. The central dining area has a scenic viewing deck built over the river, and there is a swimming pool and water-level bar where we can relax during the heat of the day. Thorntree’s riverside location and its unique position within the National Park allows for a wide choice of activities. This safari includes a sundowner cruise on the river with the chance of seeing a variety of birds and mammals, a drive into the National Park where unusual mammals such as white rhino can be seen, and the unique opportunity to canoe on the river looking for birds and animals.

A visit to Victoria Falls is also part of the itinerary For the more adventurous there are a host of other activities available such as white-water rafting, kayaking, bungi jumping, microlight flights over the Falls and so on. These activities are not included in the cost of this safari but can be arranged once we arrive at the lodge. Derek Solomon will personally lead each tour. Derek is a well-known ornithologist and naturalist, and has published several books on birds and birding in southern Africa. His most recent publication is "LBJs made easier" a book on the identification of those little brown jobs that cause so many difficulties in the field. He is currently working on a guide to the behaviour of the wildlife of east and southern Africa, a joint project with Dr Dale Toweill, a prominent wildlife biologist based in the USA.

The safari ends in Livingstone with its convenient regular direct flights back to Lusaka or to Johannesburg to connect with flights back home or other safari destinations.

This safari can be arranged throughout 2002 for groups of between 4 and 10 people.
