THE SHOOTING STAR INN

We are a small, relaxed family run hotel, located on the eastern side of the exotic
East African island of Zanzibar. Our accommodation and restaurant are
both highly recommended by the Lonely Planet Guide to Tanzania and the
Bradt Guide to Zanzibar & Pemba.

Nestled on a headland, amongst lush tropical gardens, The Shooting Star Inn overlooks the beautiful fine white sands and coconut palms of Kiwengwa beach. The atmosphere is intimate and tranquil with spectacular views across a coral reef to the azure Indian Ocean beyond. Zanzibar Zanzibar is an island off the coast of Tanzania, whose very name inspires visions of The Thousand and One Nights and evokes the heady aroma of cloves and spices for which the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are famous.

The Shooting Star Inn is less than an hour’s journey from Zanzibar's Stone Town, we can arrange for you to be met by a friendly face, Ali Baba, our driver, who will pick you up in person and escort you directly to the inn at Kiwengwa Beach.

Accommodation is built to a high standard in traditional Zanzibari style with white limewashed walls, high beamed ceilings and large windows. Our Sea View Cottages all contain beautifully hand-carved wooden Zanzibari beds draped with tailored mosquito net canopies. Cottages and Lodge rooms are also equipped with electric fans to complement Kiwengwa's cool sea breezes. We can accommodate you on a Full, Half Board or Bed & Breakfast basis depending on your preference.

Sea View Cottages
We have six spacious en-suite rooms with private verandahs overlooking the sea. The cottages are set apart from the bar and restaurant to enable residents to relax and enjoy the perfect peace and tranquility. All rooms have breath-taking views of Kiwengwa beach, the coral reef and the ocean.

Lodge Rooms
We have three more simply furnished, en-suite rooms built together as a Lodge, each with its own terrace leading on to our flourishing tropical gardens, with views through to the Indian Ocean beyond. They are set closer to the main bar, restaurant and sunbathing areas.

Restaurant
The open-air restaurant and bar have views over the tropical gardens and the stunning blue ocean panorama. Guests and other visitors enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner surrounded by natural beauty while soaking up the gentle sounds of birdsong and the sea. We serve a wide variety of African and international cuisine, and specialise in lobster, meat grills and smoked fish, using traditional African recipes. Menus change daily... We invite you to join us for fine food, friendly service and an intimate atmosphere at Kiwengwa’s favourite restaurant. Karibu chakula!

Activities
Venture out across the coral reef which unfolds like a carpet at the foot of our beach steps and explore the marine life amongst its tidal pools; visit fishing villages just next door where you'll be warmly welcomed by the inhabitants. Shop for trinkets, carvings and brightly coloured, wrap-around cotton sarongs or "kangas" at Kiwengwa's local bazaar. Witness the morning rituals of the local women farming seaweed and the fishermen returning with their catch. And in the hazy late afternoons, lie back and listen to the lively melodies of children singing as they gather cockles and mussels in the shallows. Bicycles are available for hire and are an ideal way to cruise around the local area and become a part of this rhythmic tropical tapestry.

On other days, simply immerse yourself in the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean when the tide is high. You might also like to try a floodlit swim in the crystal clear pools of a limestone cave. For those with more energy to burn, here on Kiwengwa beach we can easily arrange recreational scuba diving, PADI courses, snorkelling, fishing, boat trips and wind surfing. Visits to Zanzibar Town, the Red Colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest, Spice Tours, Sunset Cruises and trips to many sights of historical interest can also be organised. If you would like to combine a visit to The Shooting Star Inn with a stay in Zanzibar Town or a mainland safari we can also help you with your booking.
